RANKS & SCORES

Ranks

  • Ranks are calculated through a formula that uses five different measures:
  • CATEGORY 1: Black Student Body Enrollment – This category is rated based on the ratio of the actual student body percentage of enrolled

Scores

  • Ranks are calculated through a formula that uses five different measures:
  • CATEGORY 1: Black Student Body Enrollment – This category is rated based on the ratio of the actual student body percentage of enrolled Blacks divided by the  percentage of expected enrolled Blacks (calculated by considering the Black state and rest of USA demographics and the school’s In-State and Out-of-State enrollment). Aside from LOUISVILLE (underrepped by 2%), Blacks are underrepresented anywhere from 28% to 82% at each Power 5 university.
  • CATEGORY 2: All Black Student Grad Rate – This measure is of the graduation rate for all Black undergraduates at the university. This rate ranges from 26% to 93% at Power 5 universities.
  • CATEGORY 3: All Black VS All White Student Grad Rate – This measure is of the Black graduation rate versus White graduation rate for all undergraduates at the university. The graduation rate for Black students ranges from 3% to 57% LESS than White students at Power 5 universities.
  • CATEGORY 4: Black Student-Athlete Grad Rate – This measure is of the graduation rate for all Black student-athletes at the university. This rate ranges from 55% to 98% at Power 5 universities.
  • CATEGORY 5: Black VS White Student-Athlete Grad Rate – This measure is of the Black graduation rate versus White graduation rate for all student-athletes at the university. The graduation rate for Black student-athletes ranges from 0% to 40% LESS than White student-athletess at Power 5 universities.
  • For each one of these five categories, schools are credited a number of points (between 0 and 25) for the range in which they fall.
  • If any ties occur between schools, the school with the greater Black Student Body Enrollment Measure #1 is awarded the higher ranking.
  • Weightings for each of these five categories was as follows: CATEGORY 1 – 4/10 | CATEGORY II – 2/10 | CATEGORY III – 2/10 | CATEGORY IV – 1/10 | CATEGORY V – 1/10

Demographics and Graduation Rates

  • Maryland and Virginia percentages both include Washington DC because Washington DC residents are treated as in-state residents by schools in both states.
  • All population numbers are based on US Census demographics provided for 18-24 year-olds in 2014.
  • All raw numbers regarding enrollment and student body and student-athlete graduation rates were gathered from the NCAA GSR Search tool.
  • To provide the best comparisons, Black and White refer to non-Hispanic Whites and Blacks who reported themselves as White or Black alone, not in combination.
  • Likewise, unknown and two or more races were excluded from calculating the percentages Blacks and Whites comprised of the USA, state, and collegiate populations.
  • Numbers from all schools with regards to student body enrollment are from Fall 2014.
  • Graduation rate numbers are from the most recent four class average (average of students that entered in 05-06, 06-07, 07-08, and 08-09 and graduated within six years).

Use of Reported In-state, Out-of-state Numbers

  • In-state and out-of-state student percentages were obtained from the Big Future website in Spring 2015 with the exception of Florida, Illinois, and Mississippi State (Peterson’s).
  • Schools demographic numbers were available for the complete student body, not broken down for in-state and out-of-state student demographics. Consequently, rather than assessing in-state and out-of-state demographics individually, schools actual cumulative in-state and out-of-state demographics were measured against their ideal cumulative demographics.
